Even if you love the way blank walls and corners allow a space to breathe, adding a touch of impact or cosiness here and there can really bring your home interior to life.

Here are eight simple ways to do it:

Tall, Potted Plants

Large, leafy plants are perfect for filling bare corners or immense, lounge room walls with high ceilings – plus, they add life and texture to a space. As long as your greenery has enough natural light to live on, you're set.

Table and Chairs

Make the most of a huge living area by creating a little nook for two in that open corner. Two sophisticated chairs and a little card table are ideal for reading, dining or chit-chatting. Even creating more sitting space can be elegantly done with two, outward-facing high-back chairs – like the Vienna Arm Chair – a cosy rug and coffee table.

Corner Desks

Maximise wasted corner space in your home office with – you guessed it – a corner desk. The angular design offers a seamless fit for tight spaces, while providing extra room to play with. Corner desks also complement small homes without studies. Discover a variety of styles at Wayfair.

Shelves

Shelving offers endless options for vacant corners or barren wall space. Free-standing shelves – pyramid style, in particular, can really dazzle a corner. Try a dining room display of beautiful plates, designer cookbooks and containers.

Floating shelves are also fabulous because you can use them to fill walls in virtually any room. Add framed photos and knickknacks.

Forward-Facing Bookshelves

Bookshelves displaying book covers as your décor are a great use of unfilled wall space, especially in kid's rooms, with their many colourful storybooks. You can build floating bookshelves yourself (with the help of DIY bloggers) or invest in a free-standing, forward-facing bookcase.

Artwork

Printsmurals and photography offer many options for bare walls. Large-scale artwork, for example, can create big impact on vast walls with high ceilings. Just make sure the size of your print is in proportion with the rest of your furniture (i.e. enormous prints with large sofas and long sideboards), so the art complements rather than overshadows.

Or, turn any blank wall into a gallery. Arrange much-loved paintings, framed photos and other hanging treasures in a grid formation, within your lounge room, entryway, or any wall needing "ka-pow." This technique can also serve as a headboard on the clear wall space, above your bed.

Wallpaper

Never underestimate the power of wallpaper to fill a forgotten entryway wall or closed-off, bathroom wall, begging for attention. Whichever room you choose, try using your wallpaper as the backdrop for a theme. For example, if you decide on palm-tree-covered paper for the doorway, perhaps continue the coastal look with a white console table and lamp, maybe a few framed travel photos and seashells. Topping with a framed wall mirror can also add a gentle break to the wall print.

Hanging Letters

Have a favourite quote that inspires you? Why not spell it out on that unused kitchen wall where you can see it every morning? You can purchase letters made of wood or other lightweight materials at your local craft store. Simply paint them in a complementary colour and hang. Or, make it even easier with removable wall decals from HM Wall at Wayfair.
